Rajya Sabha passes 4 bills in 3.5 hours amid opposition walkout

Rajya Sabha on Tuesday unanimously passed four bills, including one that seeks to equip military commanders of all tri-service organisations with full administrative and disciplinary powers, after the opposition MPs had staged a walkout over the non-acceptance of their demand for holding a discussion on Manipur instead.

According to a new bill introduced in the Rajya Sabha Chief Election, Commissioner and Election Commissioners will be selected by a three-member panel comprising the Prime Minister, the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and a Cabinet Minister. The panel will reportedly not have the Chief Justice of India. The bill diverges from a Supreme Court ruling in March, which stated that the committee's composition should consist of the prime minister, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, and the Chief Justice of India.
