Ahead of the conference, the International Energy Agency released a report, calling the idea of widespread carbon capture an "illusion.". The West's energy watchdog said the fossil fuel industry needs to decide whether to help the world transition to clean energy or allow the impending climate crisis to worsen. In response, OPEC issued a statement accusing the IEA of painting oil producers as villains. This presents an extremely narrow framing of the challenges before us, and perhaps expediently plays down such issues as energy security, energy access and energy affordability, OPEC statement, via NBC. NBC reports that greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of fossil fuels remain the leading cause of climate change.
