2 nominated seats in Rajya Sabha vacant for over 20 months

Vacancy in Rajya Sabha's Upper House for more than 20 months surprises as government could have easily filled two seats. Nominated members with special knowledge or practical experience in literature, science, art, and social service are nominated by the President. Five of the 10 current nominated MPs have joined the BJP.

The main opposition parties are the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress (INC). The state has 21 seats in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) and 10 seats in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of the parliament). The last general election for the Lok Sabha and the state assembly was held in 2019, in which the BJD won 12 and 112 seats respectively, while the BJP won 8 and 23 seats, and the INC won 1 and 9 seats.
