Duterte reportedly sought asylum in China amid fears of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest.

China has denied media reports that former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte sought asylum in the country before his arrest on March 11, 2025.

Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Guo Jiakun, stated that neither Duterte nor his family submitted an asylum request.

Duterte was detained in Manila following an ICC warrant for crimes against humanity related to his controversial war on drugs, which led to thousands of extrajudicial killings.
