‘New Covid strains detected in India highly transmissible’: PGIMER Chandigarh

Director of Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, Prof Jagat Ram said the new Covid-19 strains detected in the country are highly transmissible.

"New Covid-19 strains detected in India are highly transmissible.

We should take all possible precautions to prevent the rise in cases,” he said.

The Centre on February 23 said two new Covid strains were found in Maharashtra, Kerala and Telangana.

It, however, said there is no scientific evidence to suggest the new strains are linked to recent surge.

The variants, namely N440K and E484K were detected in Maharashtra and Kerala.

One of the two Covid variants has also been detected in Telangana.
