Delhi roots: New Sri Lankan PM Harini Amarasuriya's fascinating link to India

Harini Amarasuriya has been appointed as Sri Lanka's 16th Prime Minister, making her the first woman in this role since Sirimavo Bandaranaike in 2000. An academic-turned-politician, she studied Sociology at Delhi University's Hindu College from 1991 to 1994. Her appointment is expected to bolster ties between India and Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankans hopeful as country elects first leftist president
Residents in Colombo, the Sri Lankan capital, are hoping for change following the country's election of its first leftist president in Anura Kumara Dissanayaka. The previously fringe politician, whose party led two failed uprisings in the 1970s and 1980s before renouncing violence, has ridden a wave of support since Sri Lanka's 2022 economic meltdown.
