Halla Tomasdottir, a businesswoman and investor, wins Iceland's presidential election, succeeding President Gudni Th. Johannesson. Iceland has a tradition of electing women to high office, with Vigdis Finbogadottir being the first democratically elected female president in 1980.

Tómasdóttir was elected to the largely ceremonial post with 34.3%, defeating a former prime minister, Katrin Jakobsdottir, who gained 25.2%.
