While Fosse is not well-known to the general public outside of Norway, he is internationally celebrated within the literary community. .
He has been referred to as "the most produced living playwright," NPR reports. .
His immense oeuvre, written in
Norwegian Nynorsk and spanning
a variety of genres consists of a
wealth of plays, novels, poetry
collections, essays, children's

widely performed playwrights in

Fosse began as a novelist, only to break through as a playwright in his 40s.
