On November 25, Taiwan's Centers
for Disease Control said that the
island has been placed on "high alert." .
The alert includes notices urging symptomatic
travelers from China, Hong Kong and Macau
to seek immediate medical attention. .
China's state-controlled media
has reported hospitals in northern
China are operating at full capacity. .
Taiwan's CDC said that it was monitoring a five-week
surge in respiratory infections, which is 2.5 times
higher than numbers over the past three years. .
Taiwan is vigilantly
monitoring the situation, Fang Chi-Tai, Professor at the Institute of Epidemiology and
Preventive Medicine at National Taiwan University, via 'Newsweek'.
According to Chinese authorities,
the surge in respiratory infections is the result
of various seasonal illnesses, including influenza,
COVID and mycoplasma pneumonia. .
Otherwise known as "walking pneumonia," the
symptoms of mycoplasma pneumonia include fever,
cough, bronchitis, headache, sore throat and fatigue.
'Newsweek' reports that children
face an increased risk of developing
walking pneumonia when infected. .
China has yet to make infection data publicly available,
while individual hospitals have not disclosed the total
number of new cases related to the latest outbreak.
