BBC reports that 25 China-based firms and individuals
are facing United States sanctions for their alleged
production of chemicals used to produce fentanyl.
The news comes as fentanyl, a powerful opioid
prescribed as a painkiller and sedative, remains
at the center of an ongoing drug crisis in the U.S.
According to Attorney General
Merrick Garland, fentanyl's supply chain , "often starts with chemical companies in China".

are aimed at a "China-based network responsible for the
manufacturing and distribution" of precursors of fentanyl.
