Finance bill protest: Kenyan policeman's hands blown off in tear gas blunder

Inspector David Maina, a Kenyan police officer, suffered catastrophic injuries when a tear gas canister accidentally exploded in his hands.

Attached to the Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU), Inspector Maina was in a stand-off with protesters against Kenyan President William Ruto’s deeply unpopular Finance Bill in Nairobi city centre on 18 June 2024.

Inspector Maina was admitted to Nairobi West Hospital.
