Despite the rise in evangelicalism and its crossover into politics, religion in the United States is actually on the decline.

The General Society Survey found that in 1970 only 5% of people self-identified as being religiously unaffiliated.

That number is exponentially higher today, but that doesn’t mean what you might think.
