He was 76.
The NFL player who became an actor was later known for being accused of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson amid a high-profile televised car chase and trial in which he was ultimately acquitted of murder charges.
The Simpson family shared the following statement on social media, "On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer.
He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren.
During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace."
