Health officials in Oregon, USA, have confirmed a case of bubonic plague in a local resident, believed to have been transmitted by a pet cat.

Dr. Richard Fawcett, the health officer for Deschutes County, announced last week that all individuals in close contact with the infected person and the cat have been identified and provided with appropriate medication.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, the county reassured the public on Wednesday that the case was detected and treated early, posing minimal risk to the community.
