Late on Friday, a seismic event measuring a magnitude of 6.1 rattled the southern Pacific coast of Guatemala, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake prompted some residents to flee their homes, with early indications of structural damage to buildings.

The seismic activity also reverberated in neighbouring El Salvador.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of injuries, as the earthquake occurred just past midnight while many were asleep.

El Salvador authorities described the quake as "strong" and are actively monitoring unfolding developments.
