The death toll from a series of powerful earthquakes that struck Japan on New Year's Day has risen to 73 as of Thursday.

The devastating quakes, including a magnitude 7.5 tremor, rocked the Noto Peninsula in the central prefecture of Ishikawa, causing widespread destruction and triggering tsunami warnings as far away as eastern Russia.
