Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, Europe's longest-serving monarch, has announced her decision to abdicate the throne after an extraordinary 52-year reign.

In a surprise announcement during her traditional New Year's Eve speech, the 83-year-old queen revealed that she would step down on January 14, 2024.
