The United Nations has warned that the Earth is on track to hit a "hellish" three degrees Celsius of global temperature increase.

According to the UN's report, in order to reach the internationally agreed target of 1.5 degrees Celsius, 22 billion tons of carbon must be cut from 2030 projections.

'The Guardian' reports that the amount needed to be cut is 42% of total global emissions and equivalent to the output of the world's top five polluters.
