Canada vs India: Khalistan Movement and its history | India-Canada diplomatic ties | Oneindia News

As India and Canada relations continue to get tangled further in the wake of Canada's allegation that India was involved in the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, let us look at the history of the movement.

The movement was suppressed and crushed in India followed by Operation Blue Star in 1984 and Operation Black Thunder in 1986 & 1988.

However, the movement continues to get support from sections of the Sikh population especially the Sikh diaspora in Canada, Australia and the U.K. Khalistan's supporters have demonstrated in other countries too, leading to diplomatic discomfort for India.
