The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) said that Vilda was "key to the notable growth of women’s football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings.".

The decision to fire the head coach represents "one of the first measures of restructuring announced by (interim) President Pedro Rocha," the federation said.

Social media videos of the head coach went viral, depicting "cold reactions from some of Spain's substituted players toward Vilda and his staff," CNN reports.

Last year, 15 senior women's squad members sent letters to RFEF to say they'd no longer play unless changes were made to the coaching staff.

Three of those players, Mariona Caldentey, Aitana Bonmatí and Ona Batlle, were on Spain's World Cup team.

Controversy escalated when Vilda seemingly touched a female staff member inappropriately after Spain scored a goal against England.

Montse Tomé will replace Vilda.

Rubiales has been given a 90-day suspension as disciplinary proceedings take place.

He previously said that he would not resign and that the kiss was "mutual," which Hermoso adamantly denies.
