Dozens of people have died after fast-spreading wildfires caused devastation on the Hawaiian island of Maui and destroyed most of the historic town Lahaina.

Hawaii's Attorney General Anne Lopez said on Friday that she was opening an investigation into how authorities responded to devastating wildfires which have left nearly 70 people dead.

Most of the fires on Maui — fueled in part by violent winds from Hurricane Dora churning around 800 miles away — have not yet been contained.
