They Planned to Sell the Taj Mahal!

During Lord William Bentinck's tenure, the Taj Mahal faced the threat of being dismantled and sold to raise funds.

The auctions in 1831 and 1832 attracted Seth Lakhami Chand, the highest bidder who aimed to save the monument.

Bidding reached to Rs 2 lakhs first time and second time reached to Rs 7 Lakhs.

The intention of the highest bidder was not to dismantle the Taj Mahal rather save this monument.

His plan was successful and he could manage to save this monument.

His successful efforts saved the Taj Mahal, but triggering protests and leading to the cancellation of the auction.

The British officials stripped the silver decorations from the doors, tarnishing its history.
