Iceland raises alert level after 2200 quakes recorded in last 24 hours | Oneindia News

Iceland could potentially witness a devastating volcanic eruption very soon, after 2,200 earthquakes were recorded in the area around Iceland's capital Reykjavik in the past 24 hours.

Of these quakes, eight were measured as above three in magnitude with the largest quake believed to have been between 3.6 and 3.7.

It is believed that all these quakes originated with a magma intrusion at a depth of around five kilometers.

The Icelandic Meteorological Office said the tremors began around 4 pm on Tuesday beneath Mount Fagradalsfjall, which sits atop a volcanic system and where two eruptions have occurred in the past two years on the Reykjanes Peninsula, Iceland's southwestern tip.

The increase in the seismic and volcanic activity has been measured on the Reykjanes peninsular since the beginning of April this year.

The seismic activities have also prompted the agency to raise its aviation alert to "orange" from "green".

The colour code is designed to inform the aviation industry of eruption risks.
