James Cameron Compares Submersible Implosion To Titanic Ship Tragedy

James Cameron sees similarities between the sinking of the Titanic and the recent disaster of the sub expedition to the site of the ship's wreckage.

The "Titanic" director weighed in on the tragedy โ€“ shortly after OceanGate, the company behind the sub, shared in a statement that the five people onboard were believed to be dead.

The U.S. Coast Guard also announced that debris from the missing sub was discovered on the sea floor and was found to be consistent with a, quote, "catastrophic implosion of the vessel." James, who directed the movie "Titanic," told ABC News that he saw a connection between what happened to the sub and what happened to the Titanic itself more than a century ago.

โ€œI'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result,โ€ he said.

โ€œAnd for a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site, with all the diving that's going on all around the world, I think it's just astonishing.

It's really quite surreal.โ€
