Lizzo Changes Lyrics to ‘Grrrls’ Following Criticism Over Ableist Slur

Lizzo Changes Lyrics to ‘Grrrls’ , Following Criticism Over Ableist Slur.

Lizzo dropped the new single on June 10.

While many fans praised the song, others took issue with her use of the word "spaz.".

Originating from the word "spastic," many within the disability community consider the term an ableist slur.

NPR reports that historically the word has been used to refer to people with spastic paralysis and cerebral palsy.

'Webster's New World College Dictionary' defines the word as "someone regarded as being clumsy, awkward, stupid, odd, etc.".

After the backlash was brought to Lizzo's attention, she decided to remove the word from her song.

“I’ma spaz” was changed to “hold me back.”.

She released a statement on June 13
