On Tuesday, equity indices failed to hold onto morning gains, with the Sensex falling 236 points due to a sell-off in IT stocks and weak global market trends.

The 30-share BSE benchmark opened higher but was unable to maintain the momentum, falling 236 points, or 0.43 percent, to close at 54,052.61.

It reached a low of 53,886.28 and a high of 54,524.37 during the day.

The NSE Nifty dropped 89.55 points, or 0.55 percent, to 16,125.15.
