On This Day 1985: The Bradford City Fire

One of the worst disasters in British football history took place when a fan's failed attempt to extinguish a lit cigarette set fire to rubbish below the wooden football stand.

Windy conditions meant that what was a small fire quickly engulfed the stand, claiming the lives of 56 people and injuring 265.
