Sensex slides for fifth straight day, loses 706 points as HDFC group companies fall sharply

The Sensex and Nifty both fell more than 1% today.

Domestic stock indices fell for the fifth session in a row, weighed down by weak global share market cues.

After paring early gains, the BSE Sensex finished below the 56,500 level, while the Nifty at the National Stock Exchange finished below the 17,000 mark.

The Sensex fell 704 points, or 1.23 percent, to 56,463.

The Nifty also fell 215 points, or 1.25 percent, to 16,959.
