'The New York Times' reports that on April 1, Amazon workers on Staten Island voted to establish the company's first U.S. union.

Over 8,000 employees were eligible to vote.

The workers will now be represented by the Amazon Labor Union, formed by former Amazon employee Christian Smalls after being fired from the company.

Organizers are demanding higher pay, paid sick leave, extended breaks, paid time off for injuries sustained at work and more.

NPR reports that the warehouse was only the second Amazon facility to vote on unionizing.
