Those toxins have also been proven to cause health problems that include damage to internal organs.

The study was conducted by PennPirg, a Pennsylvania public interest research group.

The Philadelphia school board has reportedly disputed the findings, claiming that systems are in place to prevent exposure to contaminated water.

PennPirg claims that the data reviewed in their study is , "just the tip of the iceberg.".

The group found that 61% of 1,932 water outlets tested showed lead contamination in excess of one part per billion.

.

The group also found that of 65 schools for which data was available, 98% had at least one outlet with contamination above safe levels.

The science on lead is settled – there is no safe level of exposure and it is time to remove this risk to support thriving people and vibrant communities, Michael S Regan, Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator, via 'The Guardian'
