The Poona pact was signed on this day between Mohandas Gandhi and Dr BR Ambedkar granting rights to Dalits or lower caste Hindus.
The Poona pact followed from a proposal by the British Indian govt earlier that made way for a separate electorate for Dalits, an arrangements Gandhi felt would weaken Indian unity.
