An Indian rat snake hiding in a car's wheel well was rescued on Friday (June 18), but only after the vehicle was tipped on its side to get it out.

The incident happened in the Railway New Colony in Visakhapatnam in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.

Video shows a crowd of locals clustered around a car flipped onto its side to facilitate the rescue.

The rescuer mounts the vehicle and attempts to pull the snake out, grabbing it by its tail and drawing it out.

As the serpent expert pulled the rat snake out, panic gripped the locals and they retreated to a corner.

The slithery creatures are non-venomous but will attack if cornered.

They are known for coming out of their usual hiding places during the monsoon, which is at this time of year.
