According to NBC News, the ban will go into effect July 14.

The CDC reportedly said the decision was prompted by an increase in inadequate rabies vaccination certificates overseas.

Dogs are regularly vaccinated against rabies, a virus that is potentially lethal to both canines and humans.

The countries include China, Egypt, Brazil, Kenya, Russia, Peru and more.

According to a CDC estimate, 6% of dogs that come into the U.S. originate in countries considered to be high risk for canine rabies.

The CDC said that those wishing to bring a dog in from abroad must apply for a special permit.

This temporary action is necessary to ensure the health and safety of dogs imported into the United States and to protect the public's health against the reintroduction, CDC via statement .

However, the agency added that permits for emotional support animals or pet adoptions will not be issued
