City of Lafayette creates 'Youth' Human Relations Commission, seeking high schoolers to fill positions

The human relations commission has just created a new position specifically for the youth.

News 18's micah upshaw joins us in the studio this morning to tell us why.

Micah?

The commission works to address issues affecting voices who often go unheard in the community.

So this new position is actually combating that issue right within their team.

That way they can better serve others.

Right now the human relations commission consists of nine adults.

This youth commission will help bring a new perspective to the conversation.

The commission provides services for people facing discrimination.

It's ultimate goal is improve diversity in the community.

The team is looking for a group of students who have ideas to help meet that mission.

They have to be in high school and living within the city of lafayette limits.

The h-r-c's chair person says the youth are essential in what the commission works to achieve.

They are part of the community already.

I think sometimes we think of that as, 'oh well they're eventually going to be citizens in the community, you know, one they get out of school,' no, they're already citizens in the community, they're already a huge impact on that and i think it's important for us to have that voice and representation within the hrc.

The h-r-c is looking to fill seven positions for this youth commission team.

S applications are open now until friday, june 4th.

The student can serve until they graduate.
