Torrential rain began to fall in Gloucestershire, Cambridgeshire, and East Anglia on Wednesday.

In East Anglia, emergency services including the fire brigade were called out to the mammoth amount of incidents and 48 fire engines were dispatched in a six-hour period.

Rainfall in Norfolk brought traffic to a standstill as roads flooded and some had to be closed due to standing water.

Trains were suspended and one driver was pictured standing on the roof of his car to avoid the water.

In Gloucestershire the River Severn also flooded.

Social media users vented their frustration online following the incident.

Lauren Wilden tweeted: "As if today/this week wasn't already full of enough bad news.

My hometown is now flooded.

" Also taking to Twitter, Liam Ball wrote: "Minor flooding on The River Severn this morning at Leighton and Ironbridge, its forecast to rise further through the night and peak sometime tomorrow." And Gloucester Police wrote: "The A40 dual carriageway at Highnam & Over is now closed both ways.

The road is NOT safely passable in either direction." Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service said they had reports of over 250 flooding incidents, after 44.6mm of rain fell in just 13 hours.

And the situation was also dire in Bedford, as the local council and fire and rescue service both pleaded with people to stay at home.
