According to the Associated Press, NYPD officers were called to Dinkins' home Monday night.
He seemingly died of natural causes.
His death was also confirmed by Mayor Bill de Blasio to 'The New York Times.'.
Dinkins graduated magna cum laude from Howard University with a degree in mathematics.
He went on to receive his law degree from Brooklyn Law School.
In 1990, he defeated Edward Koch and Rudy Giuliani to become the 106th mayor of New York.
Giuliani offered his condolences on Twitter.
During Dinkins' time in office, he fought to expose companies and banks that did business in South Africa where apartheid was taking place
