California Governor Issues Overnight Stay-at-Home Order.

Governor Gavin Newsom has issued a new stay-at-home order in California meant to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Starting Saturday, non-essential work and gatherings must stop between the hours of 10 p.m.

And 5 a.m.

This will apply in counties that fall in the โ€œpurple tier,โ€ which is an area where widespread transmission of COVID-19 is taking place.

41 counties, or more than 90 percent of Californians, are currently in the purple tier.

The limited stay-at-home order will stay in effect until December 21.

In a statement to Deadline, Governor Newsom said he was โ€œsounding the alarm.โ€ .

The virus is spreading at a pace we havenโ€™t seen since the start of this pandemic and the next several days and weeks will be critical to stop the surge.

He also said the new stay-at-home order was โ€œcrucialโ€ to decrease transmission and slow hospitalizations in the state.

On Thursday, California county health departments reported 13,208 new cases of COVID-19.

That marks the fourth consecutive day that California has reported at least 10,000 new cases.
