How teachers are keeping elementary students safe

Students in Chico are back in class for the first time in seven months.

Action News Now spoke to teachers about how they are keeping students safe.

Mind, is there any chance this return to campus could contribute to another round of infection in the area?

New at 5 -- action news now reporter amylanski shows us how the schools are working to make sure that doesn't happen.

Amy standup: "here at mcmanus elementary they have plenty of protocols in place to keep kids safe.

One of those is it is a requirement to wear a mask.

If you go by any of the doors on campus, you can see teachers have signs up reminding the students."

Principal weaver: "well you know we have been practicing for months now in the community and i think it is directly transferring on the campus.

Each and everyday we talk about the importance of socially distancing while on campus."

Principal chris weaver says all teachers and staff are working together to enforce social distancing... and keeping masks on at school.

((natt)) "excited to be back?!

Well do your best to try and keep that mask over your nose okay?"

Katy leaf is a kindergarten teacher and says the district provided extra masks, wipes, and cleaning supplies.

"i will disinfect all the manipulatives and the supplies and materials before we get the new group of kids coming in."

Amy: "mrs. leaf said all the classrooms have their own sinks, just like this one, so students can wash their hands right here.

As you can see the teachers also covered up the water fountains just to be safe, but that is not all that they are doing."

Katy leaf: "i am going to take your temp real quick... okay..

Ready???

Beeps...awesome come on in."

Katy leaf: "our nurse gave us some medical supplies some band aids and gloves and that kind of thing, just to reduce the amount of kids we have to send down to the office."

Mrs. leaf said she was a little worried to come back,..

But is glad she did.

"you know i think we have taken the proper precautions to be responsible with what is going on."

Amy close: "some of the students opted to stay for online classes only, but a majority of them came back for in person.
