Gujarat: Heavy rains, waterlogging throw normal life out of gear; dams overflow

Torrential rains pounded several areas of Gujarat on Sunday.

Heavy showers caused waterlogging and disruption to normal life.

Rainwater entered houses in several areas of Patan and Mehsana districts.

An NDRF team reached Patan after several areas of the district got flooded.

As rivers swelled and lakes overflew, a high alert was sounded for 108 dams. Alert has been issued for 14 dams, while warning has been sounded for 17 dams. Dams received heavy inflow of water due to the downpour.

Low-lying areas have been flooded after dams and lakes started overflowing.

The Met dept has predicted extremely heavy rainfall in Gujarat till Tuesday.

So far, Gujarat has received 94.57 % of the average annual rainfall.

Kutch received the highest 162 % rainfall in the state.

Eight state highways among 138 roads have been closed for traffic.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into Arabian sea.
