Military deployed in suburb after COVID-19 cases surge in southern India

Commandos of the Special Armed Force (SAF) have been deployed as the number of coronavirus cases surged in the south Indian state of Kerala.

Footage from the Poonthura suburb of Thiruvananthapuram on July 8, shows the commandos walking through the locality, to ensure people stay at home and maintain social distancing.

According to local reports, the area has seen a rise in the number of COVID-19 cases in a short span of time.

Health officials said that they suspect super spreading, as one person has infected more than six people.

The authorities have barred people from inter-state transit between Thiruvananthapuram and Tamil Nadu.

Kerala has reported 6,196 COVID-19 cases and 28 deaths related to the disease, so far.
