- governor tate reeves has signed- a landmark bill - that retires the last state fla- bearing the confederate - battle emblem.- reeves signed the bill this - afternoon, just two days after- legislators passed it.- the signing of bill 17-96 was - called a "solemn occasion" by - governor tate reeves today... - but also a way for- mississippians to move on.- the historic occasion - effectively removes the - state flag that has flown since- 18-94.- governor reeves was joined by - numerous- government leaders, and reena - evers, the daughter of- slain civil rights activist - medgar evers.

- reeves stood today explaining - the importance of changing the- flag, and not erasing history.- - "this is not a political moment- to me, but a- solemn occasion to lead our - mississippi family to come- together, to be - reconciled and to move on.

I- know there are people of- goodwill who are not happy to - - - - see this flag change.

They fear- a chain reaction of events- erasing our history, a- - - - history that is no doubt- complicated and imperfect.

I- understand those- concerns and am determined to - protect mississippi from that - - - - dangerous outcome."
