Covid-19: Vikram Chandra discusses how govt can solve migrant crisis

With a week to go before lockdown 3.0 comes to an end , Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to interact with Chief Ministers on Monday at 3pm.

Top of the agenda would be the gradual lifting of restrictions when the lockdown ends on May 17th.

However, India has yet another crisis that the government must heed and act on, and that is the humanitarian crisis of the large population of workers walking hundreds of kilometres on foot to make their way back home.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal tweeted that close to 300 special trains are available for workers to be transported and has requested for state governments to help in this endeavour.

The crisis that should have been addressed when workers first began their journey, now poses a new threat of the virus spreading in those mobile clusters.

Thousands of those on the move will have to be screened, quarantined and sheltered as they enter their home states.
