Hard hit Monroe County combating coronavirus

Monroe county continues to have one of the highest coronavirus case counts in the state.

Wayne hereford joins us live from amory to tell us what county officials are doing to flatten the curve.

I'm live here... donna sanderson is both the emergency management director as well as the 9-1-1- director.

She knows the county like the back of her hand.

Among other things, she says the county is working to bring a coronavirus testing site to becker at the community center.

."

" i feel like our numbers are really high."

Donna sanderson she explains there is a reason.

"we were also the first county in north mississippi to get our first covid case.

So those numbers do not roll off.

They just keep adding to the numbers.

So i know of several people who have recovered and back to work and everything else is fine.and a lot of ours is in a nursing home."

Sanderson says that a lot of monroe countians are still not taking precautions for covid-19.

"we still have a lot of people walking around no masks, no gloves, you know in and out of stores that need to take precautions."

But she is fighting as hard as she can by delivering medical supplies to medical facilities and first responders in the county right out of the back of her vehicle.

" i get a deivery from mema every tuesday.

I supply medical clinics ,nursing homes, hospitals , with masks , gloves, hand sanitizer.

Anything that mema pushes to me i push out to the medical clinics and first responders."

She says that the state department of health has a direct shipment of supplies to nursing homes in the area.

If they come up a little short on supplies, she makes up the difference.

Sanderson says the county's board of supervisors is also looking to make good use of the community center at becker as a testing center.

"it would be drive-thru for the county and it is centrally- located for the county."

Sanderson says that all of monroe county's public buildings like the court houses, have been equipped with sneeze guards at counters.

And all employees are wearing masks and gloves and will be doing so for a long time.
