Sweden Could Reach 'Herd Immunity' in Weeks After Refusing Lockdown Unlike many of its neighboring countries, Sweden did not impose a lockdown on businesses and public spaces amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead, many local clubs, restaurants and other businesses have stayed open and implemented social distancing measures.

The strategy is intended to build a base of immunity among the general population while protecting those who are at a higher risk.

Sweden's chief epidemiologist said Sweden's capitol city, Stockholm, could be just weeks away from "herd immunity." Usually achieved through vaccination, 'herd immunity,' is reached when 60% of citizens in a community are deemed immune.

The tactics have been controversial as Sweden has seen high death rates relative to its neighbors.

Many have pointed out that elderly and at-risk communities remain in danger.
