parent-teacher store new owners

In lexington was in danger of becoming a thing of the past...but that all changed thanks to a teacher and her husband.

In our top story---they told abc 36's carmen lofton why it's not just a new business venture for them... ### ii meg"this store doesnt just cater to teachers...."

Meg la-rue---an educator of 20 years-- has shopped for school supplies at "the parent- teacher store" off clays mills road since moving to lexington two years ago with her husband chriss..

But a couple of months ago...she says a sign in the store's window caught her attention... meg:"i noticed over the last 8 or so months that there was a sign in the window that said that the owners were retiring."

Bowling green based owner stan young and his wife announced in 20-19 the parent teacher store might close if they didn't find a suitable new owner.

Meg:"i was just really bothered and saddend that the store might go away..."

Taking into account her years of experience as a teacher and her husband's business background...the la-rue's decided they might just be the perfect mix to make it work.

Carmen stand up: "management may have changed but the mission of the parent-teacher store hasn't.

They're trying to make things like this more accesible for people in lexington."

But not just for the people of lexington...accordi ng to the la-rue's the parent-teacher store is the only one of it's kind in central and c1 3 eastern kentucky.

Another reason they couldn't let it close.

Chriss: "cause otherwise...the teachers here would have to travel to louisville or the other side of the river in cinncinatii to find a store like this" mr. larue says the store also attracts customers from other parts of the country..and the world..

Chriss: we get customers from corbin...we do get customers from west virginia...and teachers come in from japan up to scott county every year and we get a bus load from japan..."

A world wide range of customers to a store with a world wide range of learning opportunities.

"it's a wonderful business.

And i think it benefits the community..and we're just happy that we're now a part of it."

The la-rues offically take over the store march 2nd.
