EKU PARAMEDIC STUENT RECUES PUPPIES

C1 3 student did this week.

Abc 36's carmen lofton reports he put his life-saving skills to the test...just not on those he thought he'd be helping.

A structure fire is a common call for firefighters and emt's-- -it's also a good learning opportunity for paramedic students like stewart napier..

"i fell in love with the medical side more so than the fire side."

The e-k-u student was riding along with madison county fire and ems...when they were called to a house fire.

"and after about ten minutes, the family alerted the firefighters that there were some puppies under the back porch.

Napier put his life saving skills to the test--not on humans...but on the puppies giving the first one rescued the oxygen it desperately needed... "about five minutes after that...another firefighter brought five more puppies.

All at once."

And then two more puppies ended up in napier's care... napier: " they didn't teach me how to take care of puppies in school."

Relying on instincts and training....he carefully treated each puppy for smoke inhalation and burns... they are now safely back with their mother..who made it out of the house unharmed..

And you should know this isn't his first dog rescue..

Napier also rescued 'corky' from a structure fire back in 2015 as a volunteer firefighter in eastern kentucky.

But he says he can't take all the credit.

"without all my amazing instructors and preceptors all this wouldn't have happened i wouldn't have known what to do in that situation.."
