Women seen as voters, not candidates; West Bengal most hospitable, Karnataka worst

Women account for a very small proportion of candidates and MPs. In 1962, the year consistent gender data for voters, candidates, and MPs were available, 42% of voters were women. By 2019, this had risen to 48.2%, nearly equal to their share of the population. However, only 9% of all candidates were women.
