Heavy rain batters Gujarat, Narmada dam water discharge causes flooding

The release of massive amounts of water from Sardar Sarovar dam (SSD), which touched its full reservoir level of 138.68 metres on Sunday morning, in the Narmada river due to heavy rains in the catchment areas in Madhya Pradesh caused massive flooding in low-lying areas in Narmada district.

Twenty-three of 30 radial gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam were opened in the first this monsoon season. The gates were opened to a height of 5.60 metres for a safe rise to the full reservoir level (FRL) of 138.68 metres as the dam currently stands at 137.32 metres, said officials at the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Limited (SSNNL). Alert has been sounded in some villages in the Bharuch district amid a surge in water levels in Narmada. With an inflow of over 12.90 lakh cusecs of water from the Indira Sagar and Omkareshwar dams in Madhya Pradesh, the level of Sardar Sarovar increased from 135.42 m on Saturday morning to 137.36 m by 1 pm. #Rain #Alert #Gujarat #NarmadaRiver ~HT.99~PR.102~PR.152~
