Defamation case: Rahul Gandhi refuses to apologise for his Modi surname remark, says conviction unsustainable

BJP leader and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi had filed a criminal defamation case against Gandhi in 2019 over his "How come all thieves have Modi as the common surname?" remark made during an election rally in Kolar in Karnataka on April 13, 2019.

On Friday, the Supreme Court addressed the Gujarat High Court's upholding of Rahul Gandhi's conviction and sentencing in a defamation case. The Supreme Court is currently hearing Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's plea against the Gujarat High Court's order to not put a hold on his conviction and sentencing in the defamation case. Rahul Gandhi was convicted and sentenced to two years in prison in a defamation case for his remarks against the 'Modi' surname by a Surat court on March 23.
