Vandals wreck Christmas lights display, cause $3,000 in damage

The Beaver Dam Rotary Club and volunteers are repairing their Christmas lights display in Swan Park after multiple vandals allegedly stole a golf cart from a nearby school and drove through it, wrecking multiple arrangements of the display, according to officials.

Tonight, the beaver dam rotary club is repairing a christmas lights display in swan park after it was vandalized by people in a golf cart.

Gabriella bachara shares more on the damage done and what repairs are needed.

(pkg) <gabriella bachara> "this is the third year that the beaver dam rotary club has put on this lights display in swan park.

But it's also the third year that it has been vandalized somehow.

And this year the sheriff says it's up to thousands of dollars in damage."

<nat> <lance schweiger/neighor> "i looked out and oh my gosh."

Early this morning... multiple suspects stole a golf cart from a local school and sleighed through the lighted display.

<nat> destroying multiple arches and arrangements that took all of november to set up.

<lance schweiger/neighor> "the were smashed down and juste that driven over and crushed so they're beyond repair."

<sheriff dale schmidt/dodge county> "i don't know that these displays are going to be usable again in another year because of the damage.

It may only be a temporary fix.

We are going to have to replace those things."

But these volunteers aren't going to let some grinches steal christmas this year.

<nat> <sheriff dale schmidt/dodge county> "there is a lot of time that has gone into this... a lot of hard work... a lot of design has gone into it and beyond that there is a lot of money and donations that have come in from the community to make it possible."

They're rebuilding what they can so that the light display can go on for the rest of the holiday season.

<lance schweiger/neighor> "every year it gets a little better and we are trying to make it nice you know and then you get people who just don't appreciate things i guess."

<gabriella bachara> "the sheriff says this damage isn't going to deter them from making the event even bigger next year.
